GLOBAL ART LAB
Projects in Russia and Central Asia

Global Art Lab responds to current artistic and cultural issues in Russia and Central Asia through collaborations, exchanges, performances, professional development workshops and short-term residencies. Since 1998, Global Art Lab, previously VisArt, has brought more than 300 US artists, curators, performers and managers to cities throughout Russia and Central Asia to collaborate with local artists and arts specialists. These projects have generated large audiences, ongoing alliances and excellent critical attention. Global Art Lab focuses on visual art, contemporary music and professional development for young arts leaders.

Recent projects have brought the artist Mark Jenkins and curator Kendal Henry to Tashkent to lead a public art workshop for young artists, video artist Stephen Dean to St. Petersburg to participate in the Contemporary Art in Traditional Museum’s Festival, percussionists Todd Meehan and Doug Perkins to St. Petersburg to perform and conduct workshops, and Central Asian artists to New York to learn about how public art projects are organized in the US.

Each year, projects designed in collaboration with CEC’s partners in Russia and Central Asia bring new ideas and energy to developing arts communities and facilitate dialogue amongst both artists and audiences. The geographic reach and project scope continue to expand in response to local needs and interests. Among our long-time partners are the PRO ARTE Foundation (St. Petersburg), the National Centers for Contemporary Art (Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad, and Yekaterinburg), Krasnoyarsk Museum Center, Media Center Vykhod (Petrozavodsk), Perm Museum of Contemporary Art, Ilkhom Theater (Tashkent), Bactria Cultural Center (Dushanbe), and Art East (Bishkek).
