New media artist Andrea Steudel led workshops on her distinctive style of public theater in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan as part of the final installment of GAL in Central Asia. Local artists learned various shadow puppetry techniques, cleverly combining prerecorded video with handmade cutouts to tell multi-layered stories on the walls of the National Fine Arts Museum.

Evan Roth, co-founder of the Graffiti Research Lab (US), presented digital graffiti on the Palace Bridge in St. Petersburg, Russia, and conducted a workshop for young artists to demonstrate a variety of new techniques and technologies that have helped to transform the street art community, proving how innovative tag-making is not limited to pen, brush or spray can.

CEC ArtsLink’s GAL in Central Asia continued in the Spring of 2011, modeled on the series of projects in 2009, with a visit to New York by six artists from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. During their intensive trip, the group met with organizations and artists working in the fields of public art and socially engaged art and visited a wide range of contemporary arts museums, galleries, and arts centers. Following this visit to NYC the program participants, together with CEC ArtsLink, chose 4 US artists to travel to Central Asia to conduct workshops and seminars in September and October, 2011.

Artists Eve Sussman & Simon Lee conducted a 5-day workshop on narrative and collaboration at the Pro Arte Foundation in St. Petersburg, Russia. The participants were then broken into three groups and charged with the creation of a collaborative work. Each group presented and discussed sketches, footage, performances and ideas for potential projects based on the idea of narrative extracted from everyday life.

Artist Evgenia Golant, photographer Solmaz Guseynova, and documentary filmmaker Mikhail Zheleznikov conducted research and interviews with residents in the Admiralteiskiy District of St. Petersburg to create the multimedia installation Stories from the Admiralteiskiy District, a result of an extended socially engaged art project exploring the community in this diverse neighborhood. There was a series of exhibits, screenings and installations throughout the district.

CEC invited Evan Roth, the founder of the well-known public art resource network Graffiti Research Lab, to conduct workshops for young artists in Perm, Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg. The workshops built upon growing interest in street art by teaching young artists and students how to use electronics, projecting equipment, lasers and LED lamps. Roth explained his techniques for urban hacking, graffiti analysis and the use of technology in public art as part of VisArt Russia’s Socially Engaged Art Residencies. The workshops and lectures were held at the Library Blinsky in Yekaterinburg, the Perm Museum of Contemporary Art in Perm and the ProArte in St. Petersburg.

Nizhny Novgorod & Ulyanovsk, Russia
CEC ArtsLink, in collaboration with the National Center for Contemporary Art in Nizhny Novgorod, invited the New York based graffiti artist, DJ, producer and community art project manager, Fred Sepulveda, otherwise known as Fred Ones, to central Russia. While there he collaborated with local artists and musicians, discussed the historical significance of graffiti culture and developed methods to represent Nizhny Novgorod and Ulyanovsk’s past and present in public spaces. The residency resulted in collaborative public music events and a large-scale mural.

Art critic and Contributing Editor to Art in America and Artpress Eleanor Heartney traveled to Central Asia and gave lectures at the American University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and the Ilkhom Theater in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. While in Uzbekistan Heartney met with the Director of the Bukhara Museum of Art and artists of the Samarkand Union of Artists' gallery. She completed her tour with talks at the Pro Arte Foundation and Smolny College in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Upon the request of our colleagues at the Regional Agency for Creative Initiatives, CEC ArtsLink invited the artist and curator Kendal Henry to conduct an introductory public art workshop for young artists in Yaroslavl, Russia. The participants in the workshops created an inspired and well received "Bird City," made up of creative bird house designs, sign posts and murals reminding residents that birds and beasts are members of an active community, too.

Video and installation artist Eve Sussman and curator Chrissie Iles presented lectures at Pro Arte Foundation in St. Petersburg. Eve Sussman also opened an exhibition of her work at Peter and Paul Fortress and Chrissie Iles screened the video series Moving Pictures - Film and Video in Contemporary Artat the Hermitage Theatre. The screening surveyed works by some of the most influential film and video artists from the early 1990's to the present, including Matthew Barney, Steve McQueen, Eija Liisa Ahtila, Shirin Neshat, and installations by Kara Walker, Doug Aitken, PippiLotti Rist, Jeremy Deller, Fiona Tan, Paul McCarthy, Tacita Dean and many others.

Daniel Gallergos and Jerome Waag traveled to Osh, Kyrgyzstan, to participate in GAL in Central Asia. While in Osh Gallegos and Waag worked with Zhanara Nauruzbaeva to explore one of the most mundane and yet central aspects of everyday life: food. They set up a food stand, The Borrowed Kazan, in the main bazaar where the performance of cooking and serving food served as a way to engage directly with Central Asians of different classes, genders, ethnicities and ages

During the GAL in Central Asia program, Marisa Jahn developed a poetry competition, 10 Second Bayt, that allowed members of the Khojand community to submit ten-second poetic entries using their cellular phones, capitalizing on the fact that a common cell phone provider in the region does not charge for the first ten seconds of a call.

H2O: International Public Art Installation

CEC’s first international exhibition of site-specific works created by leading artists from Northern European countries opened on September 1st on the grounds of the historic Peter and Paul Fortress on the banks of the Neva in St. Petersburg. Simultaneously, the Fountain exhibition, featuring the work of young St. Petersburg artists, was on display in the garden of the Anna Akhmatova Museum.

With the support of CEC ArtsLink and the US State Department, five US artists travel to Moscow to attend the 2nd Moscow Biennale in March. The artists participate in an exhibit of American video art shown at the TsUM Department store.

CEC ArtsLink partnered with the Vermont Studio Center to bring visual artists from Central Asia to the US for month-long residencies. The residencies provided the artists with a supportive environment to create new work, forge relationships with US peers and interact with members of the local community.

CEC ArtsLink organized a series of seminars on Arts Festival management, bringing US festival directors Ruth Bradley, Director of Athens International Film Festival (Athens, OH), and Margaret Lawrence, Director of Programming at the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH), to Central Asia for 10 days. Following one seminar, local coordinator Elena Mikhailova remarked that “the seminar really helped to remind us why we began this work in the first place… the most important outcome of the seminar is that it forced the participants to think about developing joint efforts between [arts organizations] and to allow interaction and mutual cooperation to become the norm.”

CEC ArtsLink organizes an international symposium on the work of Ilya and Emilia Kabakov in conjunction with the opening of their exhibition The Incident in the Museum and Other Installationsat the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Critics and specialists from the US, Russia and Europe participate in this event, which marks the artists' first exhibition and visit to Russia since leaving in 1988.

Korean-American video artist Sooja Kim travels to St. Petersburg to discuss her work shown at the State Russian Museum as part of the ProSmotr Video Festival, to Moscow to lecture and show her work at the Institute for Contemporary Art, and to Yekaterinburg to speak in conjunction with the public showing of her work on an electronic billboard in the center of the city as part of the OUTVIDEO Festival.

A two-way exchange program for Russian and American video artists is conducted in collaboration with the New York contemporary art center Art in General. US video artists travel to four cities in Russia to lead in-depth workshops and screen new video work. In 2004, the work of 16 Russian video artists is presented in New York and Russia. Four artists travel to New York to screen their work, participate in a discussion about Russian video and visit galleries, museums and artists' studios.

US photographers Allen Frame and Franc Franca travel to five cities in Russia to show Electric Blanket, which they co-curated with Nan Goldin, and to conduct workshops for young photographers on current trends in American photography.
