CONTEMPORARY MUSIC IN RUSSIA

For nearly a decade CEC ArtsLink has been at the fore in facilitating exchanges between US and Russian musicians and their communities. These exchanges have included performances and workshops by such influential musicians as Meredith Monk, Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, the Bang on a Can All-Stars and many others.

CEC ArtsLink has long been partners with the Apositsia Creative Union, PRO ARTE Institute and DOM Cultural Center in developing successful contemporary music festivals and sponsoring master classes, workshops and performances. In the spring of 2009, Bang on a Can bassist Robert Black conducted a series of master classes in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg. This fall, the Brooklyn electro-acoustic duo Peter Principle and Dok Gregory of Zero Gravity Thinkers (ZGT) will travel to Russia to perform in the Apositsia Music Forum, the Long Arms Festival and at the Vykhod Media Center in Petrozavodsk. Through these and other endeavors, VisArt projects continue to inspire and introduce new conceptions of experimental, avant-garde jazz and contemporary American music to Russian audiences.
